Overview

The Edmonston-Zagreb attenuated measles vaccine is a live attenuated viral vaccine developed and studied under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India. Its active ingredient is the live attenuated Edmonston-Zagreb (EZ) strain of the measles virus, which is propagated on human diploid cells (HDC) or chick-embryo fibroblasts (CEF). First licensed in 1967, the vaccine is indicated for active immunization to prevent measles. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against the measles virus (Morbillivirus). In clinical trials, including WHO-sponsored studies, the vaccine has been evaluated for delivery via the respiratory tract using aerosolized nebulizer devices (such as Omron, Aerogen, and Trudell nebulizers) to assess safety and immunogenicity compared to standard subcutaneous injection.
