Overview

The Edmonston-Zagreb measles vaccine strain is a live, attenuated viral vaccine strain derived from the original Edmonston strain isolated in 1954. Developed by the Institute of Immunology, Zagreb (IMZ) through serial passaging on human diploid cells, this strain is widely utilized in global immunization programs, notably by the Serum Institute of India. It is administered subcutaneously or intranasally to induce active immunity against measles infection. The virus enters host cells by binding to cellular receptors, including membrane cofactor protein (CD46), signaling lymphocytic activation molecule family member 1 (SLAMF1), and nectin-4, triggering viral replication and a robust, long-lasting protective immune response.
