Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EDP-788 is a prodrug bicyclolide antibiotic developed by Enanta Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) and other resistant Gram-positive pathogens. It belongs to a novel class of antibiotics called bicyclolides, designed to overcome bacterial resistance. EDP-788 is highly water-soluble and is rapidly converted in the body into its active compound, EDP-322. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of protein synthesis via binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby acting as a protein synthesis inhibitor. The drug was investigated for both intravenous and oral administration in hospital and home settings. Development was discontinued after phase 1 clinical trials[1][2][3][4][5].
