Overview

Edrecolomab is a murine (mouse-derived) monoclonal IgG2a antibody that targets the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM, also known as 17-1A), a glycoprotein expressed on normal epithelial cells and various tumor cells including those of colon and breast carcinomas. By binding to EpCAM, edrecolomab recruits immune effector mechanisms such as antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity and complement-mediated cytotoxicity to destroy tumor cells. It may also induce anti-tumor activity indirectly by stimulating a host anti-idiotypic antibody response. Edrecolomab was developed primarily for the adjuvant treatment of colorectal cancer and was marketed under the trade name Panorex in Germany in 1995. However, subsequent studies showed limited efficacy in advanced disease settings and notable hypersensitivity reactions due to its murine origin. The drug has been withdrawn from the market but remains of interest for research into adenocarcinomas expressing EpCAM[1][3][6][7].
