Overview
Edrecolomab is a murine monoclonal antibody targeting the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM, also known as 17-1A), which is expressed on various carcinomas. Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a pyrimidine analog antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase and disrupts DNA synthesis. The combination of edrecolomab and fluorouracil has been investigated for adjuvant therapy in patients with resected stage III colon cancer. Clinical trials have shown that adding edrecolomab to fluorouracil-based chemotherapy does not improve overall or disease-free survival compared to fluorouracil alone[1][2][3]. The combination was well tolerated, with similar toxicity profiles to standard chemotherapy regimens[1][2]. Edrecolomab was developed by Centocor and licensed as Panorex in Germany for postoperative colorectal cancer[5].
