Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Efacid is an oral antacid suspension developed by Strassenburg Pharmaceuticals for the management of acid reflux and heartburn. It is a fixed-dose combination containing magaldrate, light magnesium carbonate, and sodium alginate. Magaldrate, a hydroxymagnesium aluminate complex, rapidly and sustainably neutralizes excess gastric acid, raising the stomach pH. Light magnesium carbonate acts as an additional antacid to neutralize gastric acidity and provides a mild laxative effect to counteract the constipating properties of aluminum-containing antacids. Sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a viscous, low-density gel raft that floats on top of the stomach contents, creating a physical barrier that prevents the reflux of acidic gastric contents into the esophagus. Together, these components provide rapid and prolonged relief from gastrointestinal discomfort associated with hyperacidity and gastroesophageal reflux.
