Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) used in combination with other antiretroviral agents to treat human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in adults and children. It works by noncompetitively inhibiting the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme, thereby blocking viral RNA-directed DNA polymerase activity and reducing the amount of HIV in the blood. Efavirenz does not cure HIV but helps lower the risk of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and related illnesses. The drug was approved by the FDA on September 17, 1998[1][2][3][4][7][8].
