Overview

Efavirenz/lamivudine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral therapy developed by Quality Chemical Industries for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It consists of three active ingredients: efavirenz (400 mg), a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI); lamivudine (300 mg), a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI); and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (300 mg), a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). Efavirenz acts by allosterically inhibiting the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, while lamivudine and tenofovir act as competitive inhibitors that cause DNA chain termination. This combination is administered as a single oral tablet once daily, typically at bedtime to mitigate nervous system side effects. It is approved for use in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 35 kg.
