Overview

Efavirenz + tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is an oral fixed-dose combination of two antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. **Efavirenz** is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that binds directly and non-competitively to reverse transcriptase, disrupting its activity. **Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)** is a prodrug of tenofovir, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that inhibits the HIV reverse transcriptase by competing with natural substrates and causing chain termination after incorporation into viral DNA. The combination is designed for use as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimens, typically in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 40 kg, to suppress viral replication and decrease the risk of progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). These agents do not cure HIV but reduce viral load and transmission risk[2][5][6].
