Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Efesovir** is the trade name for FS-1, an investigational iodine-containing ionic nanostructured antimicrobial nanocomplex developed by the Scientific Center for Anti-Infectious Drugs in Kazakhstan. FS-1 contains molecular iodine coordinated within alpha-dextrin- and peptide-associated complexes with lithium, magnesium, and potassium halides. It has been developed as an adjunctive anti-infective treatment for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and has also entered a planned Phase 2 study in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 as an oral solution. Its proposed antimicrobial and antiviral activity is associated with release or exposure of iodine-containing active centers that may interact with particular DNA nucleotide sequences; however, no validated single molecular target has been established.
