Effervescent calcium magnesium citrate (EffCaMgCit) is an investigational oral formulation developed by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center specifically for patients with Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) on hemodialysis. This small molecule combination therapy is designed to address the high risk of cardiovascular complications in this population by retarding the formation of calciprotein particles (CPP), which are known precursors to vascular calcification. The formulation provides a highly soluble source of calcium, magnesium, and citrate, serving multiple therapeutic roles: it acts as a phosphate binder to manage hyperphosphatemia, provides magnesium supplementation to inhibit calcification, offers alkali therapy via citrate to correct metabolic acidosis, and suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. By targeting these metabolic pathways, EffCaMgCit aims to reduce coronary and peripheral artery calcification, as well as cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis.
