Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Efodyl is an oral antibiotic formulation developed by MERAP Group (now rebranded as MerapLion) containing cefuroxime axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin. The product is distinguished by its use of proprietary Micro Particles Matrix (MPM) technology, which is designed to mask the bitter taste of the active ingredient, thereby improving patient compliance, particularly in pediatric populations. Cefuroxime axetil is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in the body to its active form, cefuroxime. It exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, leading to cell lysis. Efodyl is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as otitis media, sinusitis, and bronchitis), skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and early-stage Lyme disease.
