Overview

Efrotomycin is a kirromycin-like antibiotic produced by Streptomyces lactamodurans (also referred to as Nocardia lacamduranns in some sources). It is primarily used in animal agriculture, especially for swine and poultry, where it serves as a feed additive to promote growth and improve feed efficiency. The drug consists of several components (Efrotomycin A1, A2, B1, B2) and has a narrow antibacterial spectrum. Its main mechanism of action is the inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis by targeting elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu), thereby interfering with peptide transfer reactions essential for bacterial growth. Efrotomycin shows activity mainly against certain Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli but limited or no activity against most Gram-positive bacteria like Bacillus subtilis. It was marketed under the brand name Producil for use in livestock feeds[1][4][5][8].
