Overview

Efsubaglutide α (BEM-059) is a long-acting recombinant human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is a fusion protein consisting of a GLP-1 analogue fused to the Fc portion of human IgG4, designed for once-weekly subcutaneous administration. Developed by Shanghai Benemae Pharmaceutical, it is being investigated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). By activating the GLP-1 receptor, it enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppresses glucagon release, and slows gastric emptying, leading to improved glycemic control and weight loss. Clinical studies have evaluated its efficacy both as a monotherapy and in combination with lifestyle interventions such as high-dose dietary fiber.
