Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EG-COVID-003 is an mRNA-based vaccine developed by EyeGene Inc. for the prevention of COVID-19. Unlike the lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery systems used by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, EG-COVID-003 utilizes a cationic liposome-based drug delivery system that is free of polyethylene glycol (PEG), potentially reducing the risk of anaphylactic reactions. The vaccine encodes the surface antigen (spike protein) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. A key advantage of this candidate is its freeze-dried formulation, which allows for storage and distribution at standard refrigeration temperatures (2-8°C), bypassing the need for ultra-cold chain logistics. It has progressed into Phase 1/2a clinical trials in South Korea.
