EG-Mirotin is a novel, first-in-class recombinant polypeptide therapeutic developed by EyeGene for the treatment of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and diabetic macular edema (DME). Its active ingredient, EGT022, is a 58-amino acid peptide derived from the human ADAM15 protein. Administered via subcutaneous injection, EG-Mirotin differentiates itself from standard intraocular treatments by providing a systemic approach to retinal vascular repair. The drug's mechanism involves binding to integrins on the surface of platelets, which triggers the release of growth factors, most notably angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1). This process facilitates the recruitment and stabilization of pericytes, which are essential for maintaining the integrity of retinal capillaries and preventing the vascular leakage characteristic of diabetic eye diseases.
