EGF4-FITC is a fluorescently labeled peptide probe designed for the molecular imaging of urothelial cancer. It consists of a specific peptide sequence, EGF4, which is derived from the human epidermal growth factor (EGF) binding motif and conjugated to fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). The probe is engineered to bind with high affinity to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a protein frequently overexpressed in bladder cancer cells but absent in normal superficial urothelium. Crucially, EGF4-FITC is non-activating, meaning it binds to the receptor without inducing phosphorylation or downstream signaling pathways. This property allows it to serve as a cancer-specific contrast agent for real-time endoscopic imaging techniques like confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE), helping clinicians differentiate malignant lesions from inflammation or normal tissue during cystoscopy.
