Overview

EGFR BATs are an adoptive cell therapy in which a patient's own activated T cells are armed ex vivo with a bispecific antibody targeting both CD3 (on T cells) and the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on tumor cells. The most common format uses a chemically heteroconjugated or recombinant anti-CD3 x anti-EGFR bispecific antibody to coat the surface of expanded autologous activated T cells. Upon infusion, these "bispecific antibody-armed" T cells (BATs) can recognize and kill EGFR-expressing tumor cells through non-MHC-restricted cytotoxicity while also secreting Th1 cytokines and chemokines. This approach has been studied primarily in locally advanced and metastatic pancreatic cancer but has shown preclinical activity against other solid tumors such as breast, prostate, and glioblastoma[1][2][3][4]. The therapy is investigational and not yet approved for any indication.
