Egg oral immunotherapy (OIT) is an investigational treatment for egg allergy that was studied in the CoFAR7 clinical trial (NCT01846208). The therapy involves the oral administration of gradually increasing doses of egg white powder to modulate the immune system's response to egg proteins. The goal is to induce desensitization and, ultimately, sustained unresponsiveness, allowing individuals with an allergy to tolerate egg in their diet. This form of allergen immunotherapy is considered a biologic and was developed and studied by the Consortium for Food Allergy Research (CoFAR), a consortium funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and led by investigators including Dr. Hugh A. Sampson. The CoFAR7 trial was a Phase 2 study that compared the efficacy of egg OIT to baked egg therapy in children.
