Overview

Egg phosphatidylcholine (egg-PC) is a natural phospholipid-form choline supplement derived from egg yolk. It is primarily used in clinical research to address nutritional choline deficiency in preterm infants, who have high requirements for choline to support rapid brain development and membrane synthesis. Unlike inorganic choline salts, egg-PC provides choline in a lipid-bound form, which is integrated into the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin in cell membranes. It also serves as a precursor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and the methyl donor betaine, and it facilitates the plasma transport of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The compound has been studied by Universitätsklinikum Tübingen in pharmacokinetic trials (e.g., DRKS00020502) to evaluate its efficacy in increasing plasma choline levels in neonates.
