Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Eggplant extract (from *Solanum melongena*) is a botanical product used as a dietary supplement and investigated for the management of dyslipidemia. It is rich in flavonoids and other polyphenols, which are believed to be responsible for its biological activity. [1] The extract is thought to exert its effects through multiple mechanisms, including potent antioxidant activity, enhancement of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism like lipoprotein lipase, and inhibition of dietary fat absorption. [2, 3, 4] A completed clinical trial (NCT00845637) studied the effect of 450 mg eggplant extract capsules on the lipid profile of individuals, noting its popular use as an alternative treatment for high cholesterol. While some animal and in-vitro studies support its hypolipidemic potential [1, 13], human trial results have been described as modest or transitory [2], and some animal studies have shown no benefit or even increased oxidative stress.
