Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Eggplant fruit extract is a natural substance derived from the fruit of the eggplant (Solanum melongena), a plant in the nightshade family. The extract is rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, phenolic amides, and tannins, notable for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. It demonstrates free radical scavenging effects, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and cytoprotective actions. Bioactive compounds identified in eggplant fruit extract include various phenolic acids (gallic, ellagic, chlorogenic, caffeic, ferulic, cinnamic), anthocyanins, flavonoids, saponins, glycoproteins, and phenolamides such as N-trans-feruloylputrescine. Clinical and preclinical research suggests functions in reducing skin inflammation, scavenging 2-nonenal (a skin-aging associated aldehyde), and potential benefits in metabolic syndrome related to antidiabetic, antihypertensive, antihyperlipidemic, and anti-obesity effects. Used both in topical formulations for skin (lotions, creams, foams, ointments) and as nutraceutical/dietary supplements. The exact bioactive constituents and main mechanisms for all effects are not fully elucidated.
