Overview
EGX-A is a small molecule serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonist being developed as a putative serotonergic psychedelic for the treatment of depressive disorders. It is being developed by atai Life Sciences and EntheogeniX Biosciences. EGX-A acts as a full agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor, demonstrating high selectivity (over 100-fold) compared to the 5-HT2B receptor, which is a critical safety feature to avoid cardiac valvulopathy. Preclinical data indicates it is more potent than psilocin and induces a head-twitch response in rodents, a standard behavioral marker for psychedelic activity. As of early 2024, the compound remains in the preclinical research stage.
