Egyptian MTA is a bioceramic dental material developed for restorative and endodontic applications, specifically for indirect pulp capping in teeth with deep caries. Developed by researchers at Cairo University and marketed under the brand name Toothmate, it serves as a biocompatible alternative to traditional materials like calcium hydroxide and imported MTA products. The material consists of a powder (primarily tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, and tricalcium aluminate) and a liquid that, when mixed, form a paste that sets in a moist environment. Its mechanism of action involves the release of calcium ions and the creation of an alkaline environment, which promotes the formation of hydroxyapatite and stimulates pulp cells to produce reparative dentin. This process helps maintain pulp vitality and provides a biological seal against bacterial microleakage.
