Overview

EI236 is an organic-based, intrinsic ferromagnetic nanoparticle compound developed for theranostic applications in oncology. Identified through first-principles calculations and X-ray crystallography, the compound exhibits ferromagnetic properties at physiological temperatures, enabling it to be targeted to specific anatomical sites using external magnetic forces. EI236 serves a dual function as both a therapeutic anti-cancer agent and a diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent. In preclinical mouse models, magnetically controlled delivery of EI236 has demonstrated the ability to inhibit melanoma expansion while allowing for real-time visualization of drug accumulation via MRI. The development of this compound involves a collaboration between several Japanese institutions, including IHI Corporation, RIKEN, and Yokohama City University.
