Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids commonly found together in marine oils such as fish oil. This combination is used as a dietary supplement and sometimes as a prescription medication to lower triglyceride levels and support cardiovascular health. EPA and DHA are essential components of cell membranes, especially in the brain, retina, and sperm. They serve as precursors for eicosanoids—signaling molecules that regulate inflammation, platelet aggregation, vasodilation/vasoconstriction, and other physiological processes. Clinical evidence supports their use in reducing triglycerides; they may also have benefits for heart disease prevention, cognitive function during development and aging, rheumatoid arthritis symptom relief, eye health (macular degeneration), blood pressure reduction in some populations, migraine relief, asthma symptom reduction due to anti-inflammatory effects on leukotrienes/cytokines/eicosanoids[2][4][5][6].
