Opti-EPA is a concentrated dietary supplement containing the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), typically derived from marine fish oil. It is utilized as a nutritional intervention to modulate lipid metabolism and inflammatory pathways. In clinical research, specifically a Phase 2 trial sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), Opti-EPA has been evaluated for its potential to improve liver histology and reduce microscopic changes in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The mechanism of action involves serving as a ligand for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), which regulate lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis, and serving as a precursor to specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) that dampen inflammation.
