Eicosapentaenoic acid monoglyceride is a chemical derivative of the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), where EPA is present as a monoglyceride rather than a free fatty acid or ethyl ester. Monoglyceride forms are used to potentially increase the bioavailability of EPA compared to traditional forms such as triglycerides or ethyl esters. EPA itself is a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid primarily known for cardiovascular benefits, anti-inflammatory effects, and possible cognitive and psychiatric effects. The mechanism of action for its lipid-lowering effect involves reduction of hepatic triglyceride synthesis, increased β-oxidation, inhibition of diacylglycerol acyltransferase in the liver, and increased lipoprotein lipase activity, resulting in decreased plasma triglyceride levels[2][3][4].
