Overview

Ekobi Embolization Microspheres are a first-in-class, biodegradable embolic agent designed for use in embolotherapy procedures. These microspheres are composed of poly-DL-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) coated with bovine collagen. When injected into the target vasculature via catheter, they bind circulating platelets to form a platelet-rich clot that occludes blood flow to hypervascularized tissues such as tumors or benign growths. The microspheres are unique in being both biodegradable—breaking down safely into carbon dioxide and water over 4-6 months—and hyperechoic, making them detectable by standard ultrasound during and after the procedure. This allows for real-time imaging and potentially reduces fluoroscopy time. Indications include treatment of unresectable/inoperable hypervascularized tumors (such as kidney and liver cancer), uterine fibroids, and enlarged prostates due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The product is approved in Canada for malignant/non-malignant hypervascularized tumors, uterine fibroids, BPH; in the US for unresectable/inoperable hypervascularized tumors[1][2][3][5][6][7][8][9].
