Elaeagnus angustifolia is a medicinal plant widely known as **Russian olive** or **oleaster**, traditionally used in various systems of herbal medicine. The plant's main pharmacologically active components are flavonoids, anthocyanins, saponins, terpenoids, and alkaloids. Extracts, especially from the fruit and seeds, demonstrate significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, antioxidant, wound healing, and antimicrobial activities. Mechanistically, flavonoids in E. angustifolia inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipooxygenase enzymes, block bradykinin and arachidonic acid pathways, modulate NMDA receptor activity, and reduce inflammation through NF-κB pathway inhibition. The alkaloids harman and harmaline inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO), increasing serotonin and noradrenaline levels. Clinically, extracts have shown efficacy in relieving chronic pain (notably knee osteoarthritis), accelerating wound healing, exhibiting gastroprotective actions (reducing gastric acid secretion and oxidative mucosal injury), and exerting antineoplastic effects likely via immune activation and anti-angiogenesis. Topical, oral, and dietary uses are reported across traditional and modern studies[1][2][3].
