Overview

Elaeagnus angustifolia extract is a botanical extract derived from the fruit, flowers, or leaves of the Elaeagnus angustifolia plant, commonly known as Russian olive or oleaster. It contains a variety of phytochemicals, particularly flavonoids, terpenoids, polyphenols, and the alkaloid elaeagnin. The extract is traditionally used in folk medicine for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antinociceptive, muscle relaxant, and wound-healing properties. Its mechanisms of action include: inhibition of cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 (COX1 and COX2) enzymes, partial agonism at benzodiazepine receptors (likely via certain flavones), modulation of GABA_A receptors, antioxidant activity, and modulation of acetylcholine signaling in smooth muscle. There is evidence and traditional use for applications in pain management for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, wound and ulcer healing, management of gastrointestinal disorders (such as peptic ulcers and colitis), central muscle relaxation, and neurological disorders including epilepsy. The extract is available in at least one branded form (pshatin) as a polyphenol-rich preparation, used as a therapeutic for colitis and gastrointestinal diseases. Clinical evidence for most uses is limited or consists of small trials, animal models, or traditional practice rather than large-scale randomized controlled studies[1][2].
