Overview

Elaeagnus angustifolia pollen, derived from the Russian olive tree, is utilized primarily as an allergen extract for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions. In diagnostic applications, such as skin prick testing, the extract cross-links allergen-specific IgE on the surface of mast cells, triggering degranulation and a visible wheal-and-flare reaction. For therapeutic purposes, it is employed in allergen immunotherapy (AIT) to induce clinical and immunological tolerance. The mechanism involves shifting the immune response from a Th2-dominated profile to a Th1-dominated profile, increasing the production of regulatory T cells (Tregs), and stimulating the synthesis of allergen-specific IgG4 "blocking" antibodies. It is a significant aeroallergen in regions where the plant is invasive or widely cultivated, such as the Middle East and the Western United States.
