Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Elaiddo (PL1100) is a novel oral formulation of ibuprofen developed by PLx Pharma using its proprietary PLxGuard delivery technology. This formulation complexes ibuprofen with phospholipids, specifically phosphatidylcholine, to create a surface-active barrier intended to protect the gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa from the direct caustic effects of the drug. By minimizing direct contact between the acidic ibuprofen and the stomach lining, Elaiddo aims to reduce the incidence of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers and erosions while maintaining the systemic analgesic and anti-inflammatory efficacy required for conditions like osteoarthritis. Mechanistically, it acts as a non-selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), thereby preventing the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.
