Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Elasomeran + imelasomeran (marketed as Spikevax Bivalent Original/Omicron) is a bivalent mRNA-based vaccine developed by Moderna to provide immunization against COVID-19. It combines two messenger RNA (mRNA) sequences encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs): **elasomeran**, which encodes the prefusion stabilized spike glycoprotein of the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 virus (Wuhan-Hu-1), and **imelasomeran**, which encodes the spike protein of the Omicron variant (specifically BA.1 or BA.4/BA.5). Following intramuscular injection, the LNPs deliver the mRNA into host cells, where ribosomes translate the genetic code into viral spike proteins. These expressed proteins are then recognized by the immune system, triggering the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses targeted at both the original strain and the Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2. This bivalent approach is designed to enhance the breadth and durability of protection against evolving viral lineages.
