SPIKEVAX Bivalent BA.4/5 (mRNA-1273.222) is a bivalent messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine developed by Moderna for active immunization to prevent COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. It contains two mRNA components: elasomeran, which encodes the spike (S) glycoprotein of the original SARS-CoV-2 (Wuhan-Hu-1) strain, and davesomeran, which encodes the spike protein of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants. The vaccine utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver the mRNA into host cells, where it is translated into the viral spike proteins. This process triggers an adaptive immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cell activation, providing broad protection against both the ancestral strain and circulating Omicron variants. It was authorized in 2022 as a booster dose for individuals 12 years of age and older, with subsequent expansions to younger populations.
