Overview

Elderberry refers to the dark purple berries of the European or black elder tree (*Sambucus nigra* and related species). It is widely used as an herbal supplement in various forms such as syrups and extracts. Traditionally and in modern alternative medicine practices it is taken for prevention and treatment of cold and flu symptoms due to its purported immunostimulant properties. Some evidence suggests possible effectiveness for reducing influenza symptoms and relieving constipation. Other suggested uses include support for metabolic health—such as improved glucose tolerance and fat oxidation—potential antioxidant effects via anthocyanins content; anti-inflammatory activity; mild antibacterial effects; potential cholesterol-lowering action; relief from sinusitis; diuretic effect; mood improvement in animal studies; topical use for wounds/bruises with leaves or oil preparations. The mechanism of action includes binding to viral particles like H1N1 influenza virus to block host cell entry as well as general immune modulation through polyphenols that may increase white blood cell count. However most claims lack robust clinical evidence or FDA approval[2][3][4][5][7][9].
