Overview
Elecoglipron (AZD5004/ECC5004) is an investigational, orally bioavailable, small-molecule agonist of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor. Originally developed by Eccogene and licensed globally to AstraZeneca, it is designed as a once-daily oral treatment for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other cardiometabolic conditions. As a non-peptide small molecule, elecoglipron aims to provide a convenient alternative to injectable GLP-1 therapies, potentially improving patient adherence and expanding access to treatment. The drug mimics the action of the endogenous incretin hormone GLP-1, which stimulates insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, suppresses glucagon release, and promotes satiety by slowing gastric emptying and acting on brain centers that regulate appetite.
