Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Plasmalyt Infusionslösung (marketed internationally as **Plasma-Lyte**) is a balanced, isotonic intravenous crystalloid solution designed to mimic the electrolyte composition and pH of human plasma. Manufactured by **Baxter**, it contains a specific combination of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, sodium acetate trihydrate, and sodium gluconate. Unlike traditional 0.9% normal saline, Plasmalyt is physiologically balanced with a pH of approximately 7.4 and an osmolarity of 295 mOsm/L, which helps prevent hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis during large-volume resuscitation. The acetate and gluconate components act as bicarbonate precursors, providing a buffering effect. It is indicated for fluid replacement and electrolyte replenishment in various clinical settings, including surgery, hemorrhagic shock, burns, trauma, and metabolic acidosis. In clinical research, such as Phase 4 trials conducted by **Charité – University Medicine Berlin**, it is frequently used as a standard balanced crystalloid to evaluate hemodynamic stability and acid-base balance in perioperative care.
