Overview
A combination intervention used in the ECSMOKE clinical trial (NCT03630614) for smoking cessation. It consists of varenicline, a small-molecule partial agonist of the alpha-4 beta-2 (α4β2) nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, and a nicotine-free electronic cigarette (ECwoN) which serves as a behavioral and sensory substitute for smoking. Varenicline works by reducing nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms while blocking the reinforcing effects of nicotine. The nicotine-free e-cigarette addresses the behavioral aspects of smoking addiction without delivering nicotine. This combination is being evaluated as a comparator to nicotine-containing e-cigarettes.
