Overview
Eletriptan is a second-generation triptan medication used for the acute treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura in adults. It is not indicated for the prevention of migraines or for cluster headaches. Eletriptan acts as a selective serotonin receptor agonist, specifically targeting 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1B, 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1D, and 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1F receptors with high affinity. Its mechanism involves constricting cranial blood vessels and inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides from trigeminal nerve endings, thereby reducing pain and associated symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. Eletriptan does not relieve other types of pain and should only be used after a diagnosis of migraine has been confirmed[1][2][4][5][6].
