Overview
Eleutherococcus senticosus, commonly known as Siberian ginseng or Ciwujia, is a woody shrub in the family Araliaceae widely utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as an adaptogen. It is primarily used to enhance physical and mental performance and increase resistance to environmental stressors. In clinical research, it is being evaluated for the treatment of insomnia disorder, particularly when associated with the TCM pattern of heart and spleen deficiency syndrome. The pharmacological activity of Eleutherococcus senticosus is attributed to a group of glycosides known as eleutherosides (notably eleutheroside B and E), which are thought to modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and exert neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, and sedative-hypnotic effects through the potential modulation of GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems.
