Elixirium thymi compositum FoNo VIII is a standardized pharmaceutical preparation defined in the 8th edition of the Hungarian Formulae Normales (FoNo VIII). It is primarily indicated for the treatment of acute bronchitis and coughs requiring expectoration. The formulation typically contains fluid extract of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), ammonium chloride, and anise oil. Thyme extract provides secretolytic and bronchospasmolytic properties, primarily through its volatile oil components like thymol and carvacrol. Ammonium chloride acts as an expectorant by irritating the gastric mucosa, which reflexively increases bronchial secretions. Anise oil contributes additional secretolytic and mild antispasmodic effects. This combination is widely used in Hungarian clinical practice as a traditional cough remedy.
