Elobixibat is a small molecule inhibitor of the ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT), also known as the apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT), encoded by the SLC10A2 gene. By selectively inhibiting IBAT in the terminal ileum, elobixibat reduces reabsorption of bile acids, increasing their concentration in the colon. This action stimulates fluid secretion and enhances colonic motility, resulting in accelerated intestinal transit and softer stools. Elobixibat is minimally absorbed systemically after oral administration and acts locally within the gastrointestinal tract. It has been developed primarily for chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). The drug was originally developed by Albireo AB and subsequently licensed to Ferring Pharmaceuticals for global development; Ajinomoto Pharmaceuticals holds rights for Asia, while Dr. Reddy's Laboratories markets it as Bixibat in India[1][4][5][6].
