Overview

ELP-VEGF is a recombinant fusion protein consisting of human vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) conjugated to an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) drug-delivery vector. Developed by researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the University of Missouri, this therapeutic candidate utilizes the ELP platform—a thermally responsive biopolymer—to enhance the pharmacokinetic profile and organ-specific targeting of VEGF. The ELP tag increases the molecular weight to reduce renal clearance and can be engineered to provide sustained release or localized accumulation. ELP-VEGF is being investigated for its potential to treat cardio-renal syndromes, including chronic kidney disease (CKD) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), by stimulating angiogenesis, restoring microvascular density, and improving organ perfusion and function.
