Overview

Elpivirine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) developed for the treatment and prevention of HIV-1 infection. Originally discovered by Roche and subsequently licensed to Viriom Inc. in 2009, the drug is designed to inhibit the reverse transcriptase enzyme of HIV-1, thereby preventing viral replication. Elpivirine is characterized by a high genetic barrier to resistance and a favorable safety profile compared to earlier NNRTIs. It is currently marketed in Russia under the brand name Elpida and is undergoing global clinical development in various formulations, including fixed-dose combinations and long-acting injectable formulations, to improve patient adherence and address the challenges of chronic HIV management.
