Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ELQ-331 (also known as MMV167) is a preclinical-stage, long-acting alkoxycarbonate ester prodrug of ELQ-300 (MMV055), a potent inhibitor of the parasite mitochondrial cytochrome bc1 complex (specifically targeting the Qi site). Developed to overcome the poor aqueous solubility and high crystallinity of ELQ-300, ELQ-331 is designed for long-acting injectable chemoprotection (LAI-C) against malaria. It undergoes rapid and complete conversion to the active antimalarial agent ELQ-300 in vivo, providing sustained protective blood concentrations. Research has demonstrated its potential to provide multi-month protection against *Plasmodium* infection and transmission with a single intramuscular injection or subdermal implant.
