Overview

Eltanolone (also known as pregnanolone) is an endogenous neuroactive steroid biosynthesized from progesterone. It acts primarily as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABAA receptor and as a negative allosteric modulator of the glycine receptor. Eltanolone has sedative, anxiolytic, anesthetic, and anticonvulsant properties. It was investigated for use as an intravenous general anesthetic but was never marketed due to unwanted side effects such as occasional convulsions. Eltanolone is closely related to allopregnanolone (brexanolone), another neurosteroid with similar pharmacological effects.
