Overview

Eltoprazine is a small molecule drug of the phenylpiperazine class that acts as a serotonergic agent. It functions primarily as an agonist at serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors and as an antagonist at the serotonin 5-HT2C receptor. Eltoprazine was originally developed for its serenic (anti-aggressive) properties and has been investigated for several neuropsychiatric indications including aggression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cognitive disorders, schizophrenia, and levodopa-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson’s disease. The drug was first described in the scientific literature by 1987. Its development history includes work by Solvay (originator), Elto Pharma, and PsychoGenics[1][6]. Recent clinical studies have focused on its potential to reduce levodopa-induced dyskinesias without compromising motor benefits in Parkinson’s disease[4][5][6].
