Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Eltrombopag + dexamethasone is a combination therapy used primarily as a frontline treatment for newly diagnosed immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in adults. Eltrombopag is an oral small molecule thrombopoietin receptor agonist that stimulates the production of platelets by activating the thrombopoietin receptor (c-Mpl) on megakaryocyte precursors, thereby increasing platelet counts. Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties; it reduces immune-mediated destruction of platelets in ITP. The combination aims to both suppress immune-mediated platelet destruction and stimulate platelet production, offering rapid and durable responses in ITP patients[1][3][5].
