eltrombopag + telaprevir

Eltrombopag + telaprevir is a combination therapy formerly investigated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, particularly in patients with co-existing thrombocytopenia. Eltrombopag is an orally active, small-molecule thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonist that interacts with the transmembrane domain of the TPO receptor to stimulate megakaryopoiesis and increase platelet counts. Telaprevir is a first-generation HCV NS3/4A protease inhibitor that prevents viral replication by inhibiting the cleavage of the HCV polyprotein. This combination was utilized in clinical trials to manage the thrombocytopenia often exacerbated by interferon-based HCV regimens, allowing patients with low platelet counts to initiate and maintain antiviral therapy. However, with the emergence of highly effective, all-oral direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimens and the subsequent withdrawal of telaprevir from the market, this specific combination is no longer a standard of care.
